UNDATED (KDAL) – The governors of Minnesota and Wisconsin have announced that their departments of transportation will seek 889.5 million dollars in federal funding to rebuild the Blatnik Bridge between Duluth and Superior.
The current bridge was built in 1961 and is used by over 33 thousand vehicles a day.
The funds would come from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and, if the application is successful, it would cover a substantial portion of the replacement and streamline the scheduling of the project.
Minnesota Governor Walz says it is an important infrastructure project for both states and the interconnected economies.
Wisconsin Governor Evers says the project is a perfect candidate for funding under the federal Bridge Replacement Program and would strengthen both of the cities it connects.
Design work on the new bridge is expected to begin in the near future.
