DULUTH, MN (KDAL) – In July, the Port of Duluth-Superior handled the most iron ore in a single month since May of 1993.
The Chamber of Marine Commerce says other bulk cargoes also posted gains this summer in the Twin Ports including salt, limestone and a doubling of shipments of cement from last year.
Deb DeLuca, executive director of the Duluth Seaway Port Authority, says it’s been a good first half of the season as exported iron ore was up more than 26 percent from last year’s pace through July.
Meanwhile, construction of a new 56,000 square foot dockside warehouse at the Clure Public Marine Terminal continues with completion expected by the end of August.
Overall, U-S Great Lakes shipping activity is on par with the previous year with about 15.7 million tons of total cargo traveling the seaway system to date
