(Reuters) – Major League Soccer has extended the contract of longtime commissioner Don Garber through the 2027 season, the league said on Wednesday.
Garber, 67, first became commissioner of the North American league in 1999 after spending 16 years at the National Football League.
During his tenure at MLS he has overseen an expansion from 10 to 29 clubs with a 30th, San Diego FC, set to join next season.
He negotiated a 10-year global broadcast deal with Apple TV and helped bring the 2026 World Cup to the U.S., Mexico and Canada.
“The announcement of Commissioner Garber’s contract extension comes at time of tremendous momentum for soccer in North America,” MLS said in a statement.
Financial terms of Garber’s extension were not disclosed.
The league will conclude its 29th season with the MLS Cup on Saturday when the LA Galaxy host the New York Red Bulls.
