DULUTH, MN (KDAL) – A request by St. Louis County for state funding to help stabilize a privately owned cemetery on the shore of Lake Superior has cleared an important hurdle.
The Legislative Citizen Commission on Minnesota Resources has voted to include 1.44 million dollars for the project in its list of recommendations for next year. That list will be presented to the legislature for final approval during the 2027 session.
The Scandia Cemetery, at 3200 London Road in Duluth, dates back to 1881 and erosion from Lake Superior has already uncovered human remains and has left other graves close to the edge.
Since the private association that owns the cemetery does not have the means to address the issue, St. Louis County has stepped up to help solve the problem.
Engineers estimate a cost of 2.3 million dollars to construct a permanent retaining wall and stabilize the shoreline.
Besides state funding, the county is continuing to identify other sources of funds to complete the project.
County Commissioner Patrick Boyle says the state funding will be an important step toward correcting a serious situation.
